Taranaki will come alive with glitz and glamour this winter when the Right Royal Cabaret Festival returns to New Plymouth.

The evocative festival will be filled with a smorgasbord of cabaret and comedy from throughout the globe, and produced by the award-winning team at TAFT, who also oversee WOMAD New Zealand, The Powerco Taranaki Garden Festival and the Taranaki Arts Festival.

TAFT chief executive Suzanne Porter said the response from people already had been tremendously positive.

“People are hungry for something exciting to fill the gap between our biennial Arts Festival and the Right Royal Cabaret is the perfect addition. We’re expecting people to relax and enjoy world class entertainment, right here in Taranaki.”

First presented by TAFT in 2012, the Right Royal Cabaret Festival was a success, both commercially and in bringing the city alive during the winter months.

“We are always looking for ways to bring vibrancy and creativity to Taranaki,” Porter said.

“As well and being an event for Taranaki, the festival will have a focus on bringing in people from outside of the region and bundling our shows up with other Taranaki attractions to sell as a winter weekend away package.”

The festival programme will be curated by artistic director Craig Cooper, who also programmes the Taranaki Arts Festival.

"This year’s cabaret programme will be a celebration of the art of cabaret in all its forms  - where stories are told through music in the intimate surrounds of night club setting. “ Cooper said.

“We’re bringing together a diverse range of artists and shows. Their stories are sometimes comic and sometimes tragic; some shows are tributes to great artists of the past while others are deeply personal to the artists themselves. But they all share one thing above all else; the ability to connect directly with their audience to create moving and unforgettable performances.”

“I am very much looking forward to June when the much-loved Theatre Royal will be transformed into an intimate Cabaret Club, with table seating and - perhaps most importantly for some - a bar! What better way to spend an evening in the middle of winter than with some of the leading cabaret artists from across New Zealand and the world?"

The Right Royal Cabaret Festival 2018 is on at the TSB Showplace’s Theatre Royal from June 28 to July 1. The full festival line-up will be announced in April.
